Mental Health in the Workplace

How a positive environment can help!

Following on from our post last month on exercise and happiness in the workplace, we thought we’d take a little deeper dive into positive mental health and working.

Just like our physical health, it is also important to work on our mental health and keep a check on it. Research by the Mental Health Charity Mind shows that when employees feel valued and supported, they are more likely to be motivated within the work environment. By supporting staff’s wellbeing, a company is more likely to reap the rewards and have employees who not only enjoy coming to work but also are more productive.

What are some things you can do to reinforce mental positivity?

  • Involve your staff in dialogue and be open about advances or changes going on with the business - when staff feel involved in what's going on within the business and that their opinion matters it can often help them understand any changes or developments. It also means they feel more valued and overall part of the team which often has a huge impact on motivation.
  • Ensure that a work/life balance is maintained - obviously lots of jobs now involve long working hours and the occasional prep from home. However, it really does help to also ensure that your team are maintaining that work\life balance and having to relax or refresh so they don’t burn out.
  • Positive work environments - a positive work environment is key to ensuring your employees are happy. Here at QD we have music on in the background and daily smoothies that keep morale high. Of course you don’t have to copy these things but all in all making sure that the office is a comfortable place for all employees to work or even asking them for ideas can really affect their mental wellbeing.
  • Be available for your staff - regular one-to-ones or catch-ups with your employees can encourage open lines of communication and also build trust. This then allows them to feel comfortable coming to you with any issues or dilemmas or if they’re struggling in any way so you can work with them effectively.
  • Promote positive work relationships - encouraging a support culture can have a huge impact on workplace relationships. Promoting positive relationships and colleague socials can add to the feeling of teamwork and information sharing across the office.

We’re looking for the right person to join the QD team. If you’d like to meet us and have a look around then please do get in touch. Come in and join us for a smoothie and a few burpees and see what you think?!
